Nellie’s is thrilled to announce that world-renowned rock band Metallica will be donating $40,000 to our organization through their foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH). This incredible donation will allow us to continue our vital work to build a brighter future for women and their children facing violence, poverty, and homelessness.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to the members of Metallica for this extraordinary gift,” says Ingrid Graham, our co-Acting Executive Director. “This generous donation will help us continue our essential work in making gender-based violence and oppression a relic of the past.”
Although gender-based violence is often unseen, thousands of women and children live it every year. In Canada, 187 women and girls were killed by violence in 2024, up from 148 in 2019. This is why Nellie’s works tirelessly toward a future free from gender-based violence and oppression.
We are proud that our shelter can be a safe haven for women who have nowhere else to turn. Within our shelter walls, we provide a wide range of supportive and counselling services for women, and specialized programming for children. And while our shelter is home for 100+ women and children annually, that’s only a fraction of our impact. Every year, we provide support for hundreds more women and their families through life-changing community programs that empower women and break the cycles of crisis. Metallica’s generous donation will enable us to continue these crucial efforts both in our shelter and in our community.
Last week, Metallica played two sold out shows at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena as a part of their M72 World Tour. In each city Metallica visits during their tour, AWMH teams up with local non-profits to provide grants to support their communities. We’re incredibly thankful to be chosen as one of their Toronto recipients.
