Nellie's actively works to disrupt the cycle of systemic violence and oppression against women and their children by advocating for policy change, challenging norms, and raising awareness.

Our position papers give voice to the most important issues affecting our clients, we participate in public policy consultations, and we build partnerships and get involved in actions to drive social justice change.

Guided by the community and informed by the women and their children we work with, our advocacy work will continue until gender-based violence is a thing of the past.

The more we prioritize social justice, the more we can lead systemic change and prevent the many forms of oppression faced by women and their children.

To make sure we continue to look beyond our day-to-day and challenge the status quo, we have a dedicated Social Justice Committee.

We are changemakers

The Nellie’s Social Justice Committee is a guiding force behind the advocacy work we do to create a just and fair society for all.

This passionate group of staff and community volunteers have deep knowledge and expertise in key areas, including feminism, anti-oppression training, counselling, education, advocacy, business, law, program management, and journalism.

The group makes an impact through its work, often engaging and empowering women at Nellie’s to speak out and participate in change.

The committee’s work includes:

Discussing social justice issues impacting the people we serve
Conducting research informed by our experiences working with women and their children
Developing Nellie’s position papers to call for direct action from policymakers
Planning and attending social justice events in the community
Building partnerships with like-minded community groups to extend our impact
Working with the Board of Directors to ensure social justice principles are at the core of our organization’s actions
Raising awareness of social justice issues affecting women and their children
Engaging in public policy consultations to share our expertise and advocate for systemic change
