Every year, we’re so incredibly thankful for our donor community and how they continue to support the women and their children at Nellie’s. Although this support is needed all-year round, the holidays can be an especially challenging time for our families, who are often struggling to feel the magic of the season. With your help, we can work together to spread holiday joy to the families staying at Nellie’s, as well as those in our community who use our services. Here are the three best ways you can support families in need this year:
Donate cash: Above all, monetary donations are the most vital type of support you can give to Nellie’s. Cash donations allow us to be more flexible as an organization, and help us respond to urgent needs more swiftly. Here are some ways your gift can help us today:
- $35 pays for a taxi to transport a woman and her children away from a life-threatening situation
- $75 pays for one day’s food and housing at our shelter
- $150 provides support services for a woman and her children for one month
The one-time donation you make today will help Nellie’s support women and their children as they build a brighter future, free of violence and poverty. Even better, you can choose to become a monthly donor, giving us invaluable security that we can pass on to the women and children we support. Your partnership means that as well as providing essential emergency help, we can plan for the future of our services and continue to broaden our offerings to meet the needs of all our clients.
Donate gift cards: Who doesn’t love receiving a gift card as a present? For the families in the Nellie’s community, gift cards for grocery stores or Wal-Mart can make a huge difference for a single mom who’s doing everything she can to give her kids what they need. Whether these cards help them buy necessities like food, clothes, diapers, or toiletries, gift cards are an amazing present for the families we support. Dollarama or Tim Hortons gift cards are also really appreciated by our families.
Give a gift of securities: One of the most financially sound ways to support Nellie’s over the holiday season is with a gift of securities (stocks, bonds, or mutual funds). By donating publicly traded securities, you eliminate the capital gains tax that you would have to pay if you instead sold the securities and then donated the proceeds. You’ll also receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation. Even in a down market, gifts of securities are still a great option — donating appreciated stock can still be an impactful and cost-effective way to meet philanthropic goals, while also adjusting your investment portfolio to manage risk.
