Here at Nellie’s, International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than a moment — it’s a movement. This year’s theme, “Give to Gain”, aims to encourage a mindset of generosity and collaboration. We recognize that when women give their strength, support, wisdom, and solidarity to one another, we all gain empowerment, healing and hope.
This year at the shelter, we’re celebrating IWD for the entire week leading up to the big day, and on Saturday, March 7th will join women across Ontario at the International Women’s Day March and Rally in Toronto. Take a look at some of the special activities we have planned for this week to help us honour the strength, courage, and resilience of women within our shelter and throughout our community:
International Women’s Day March and Rally: On Saturday, March 7th we will proudly participate in Toronto’s International Women’s Day March and Rally with thousands of women and allies from across Ontario. The Toronto event is actually North America’s largest IWD event, leading the call for change since 1978. The event starts with a rally at 11am at the OISE Auditorium (252 Bloor St W) and the march begins at 1pm. All are welcome — join us in raising our voices and standing up for women’s rights everywhere!
Empowerment art session: One of the highlights of the week will be an art session hosted by the Toronto Art Therapy Institute, where women will explore themes of personal resilience, community support, and the “gifts” of strength that they offer themselves and others. We’re excited to see the inspiring results of this workshop!
Spotlight on changemaking women: Throughout the week, Nellie’s will host a series of meaningful activities within the shelter for residents to reflect, connect, and celebrate the importance of IWD. Each day we will spotlight a remarkable woman whose life and legacy continues to inspire change, and lead guided discussions about these key changemakers.
International Women’s Day is about progress — but for more than 50 years, Nellie’s has still been needed. This year’s “Give to Gain” theme emphasizes the power of reciprocity and support. We all need to give our support to push change forward and work to break the cycle of gender-based violence.
When we can count on you, women can count on Nellie’s. This International Women’s Day, please consider supporting our critical work.
